Hi, After some ongoing discussions I have received some material which was taken by the late H. Soper from the Isle of Man. The file was kindly supplied by Dave Storey of the IoMAS. His images were used in Neil Bones' book on meteors. I was hoping to scan and archive these remarkable results. Unfortunately the key images are missing. (Lots of empty fields, I know the feeling! I have an almost identical folder of the same ). However there is one series of 35mm slides that shows a fireball and it's spectrum! Attached are some preliminary scans. This one is identified as "Sunderland Fireball. 28/7/95. H. Soper" The spectrum is quite remarkable and shows one key advantage of ye olde fashioned technology, image scale. A remarkable catch. Need to try to straighten it before getting a graph from it. The medium format image I think is a copy of the ones used in the book but there are no notes. Cheers, Bill.

One other very interesting thing to note is that the films are quite good in the blue but record nothing longer than around 650nm. No pesky IR atmospheric lines to get in the way!

Hi Bill,
Remarkable images indeed ... appreciate that there are limited notes but any idea what equipment these were acquired with. in particular lens / grating?
Best regards
William

I can't remember the exact details but analysis of the last image (above) was in a BAA journal in 90's. I'm sure I've got a copy of it somewhere. It was a homemade medium format (6x7) job with a big transmission grating. If I remember correctly it was BIG, 4 inches x 4 inches, something like that.
