I'm presently starting a major upgrade of my present video meteor detection capability. At the moment I have a Samsung SDC 435 with 2.1mm board lens. Within a few weeks I should have a new wide field system based on a Watec 902H2 Ultimate with a Computar 2.6mm f 1.0 Auto-iris lens. If all goes to plan, before the end of the year I may also have a second Watec 902-based system with (hopefully) a 6mm or 8mm f 0.8 auto-iris lens. I‘m looking at possibly upgrading the video analogue/digital converter devices as well. At present I’m using a KWorld DVD maker USB 2.0. Is there any virtue in upgrading this? If so, to what? Thanks

Hi Michael,
I've no experience with the device you're currently using - assume you've been using it with Handy AVI or have you had a chance to try it with UFO Capture? Have you experienced any problems with it? I'd take the view that if it isn't broken, there shouldn't be any need to replace it.
Are you planning to have both cameras feed into the one PC or have a dedicated PC for each one?
The UFO Capture users on this forum have successfully used Osprey 210 Cards and USB devices such as those from Climax Digital and EZ Cap.
Best regards
William

"... have you had a chance to try it with UFO Capture? " - I've had no chance to use UFO capture yet, I want to wait to download the trial UFO capture until I have the Watec set up in place.
"Are you planning to have both cameras feed into the one PC or have a dedicated PC for each one?" - each will have a separate PC. The 'all sky' camera will be attached to the side of the observatory. The narrower FOV camera would be attached high up to the back wall of the house. The power and signal leads for this camera would feed through the loft space into a PC in my study in the attic.

This being the case I'd stick with the device you currently have for your current setup and consider one of the recommendations given in the previous posting for your second PC. They are readily available for under £20 and can be quickly deployed if you encounter issues when you start using UFO Capture.
Note that the Osprey 210 will work under Windows XP but not later Windows Operating Systems.

Hi,
Given the range of choices it can be difficult to choose the "ideal". I'd agree with William. It's better to get some experience with what you have then you'll get a better feel of it's limitations (if any) and also what improvements would be worth while (again, if any). There are so many variables in play at once, any given set of parameters will not apply to all conditions. Once you get a set of kit up and running I think you'll be surprised how well it'll work. The general hardware and software used by most is fairly reliable and will produce decent results.
Cheers, Bill.
