Hi,
Poor weather this week, although last night (Oct 21/22) was fairly clear.
A few Orionids were captured:
Leeds_NW camera - a total of 46 meteors, 7 Orionids Leeds_SE camera - a total of 60 meteors, 20 Orionids
and a small number of Northern and Southern Taurids, etc.
Bill - a few of the Leeds_NW meteors were quite bright, in case you were running any spectroscopic gear?
Cheers,
Alex.

Hi, There was a brief break in the weather on Tuesday night but not much clear sky. A total of 11 meteors, no confirmed Orionids and no spectra cheers, Bill.

Hi guys. I actually had a very clear night down in Hampshire. I pointed my cam South and let Orion cross the field of view. Camera used was a Watec 910hx/rc. Set to 1/50th sec, sensup off, AGC off, manual gain 40db with a Computar 2.6mm f1.0 lens, I used the levels adjustment on the lens to get the brightest image. The FOV is about 140 degrees. I used HandiAvi for capture.
120 meteors were captured ranging from very small and faint, to large and bright. I have yet to ascertain how many were Orionids. I don't have UFO software or any other method for analysis, so I will have to do it by visual means.
I will post my unscientific evaluation when it is complete. This was the first time using the 910hx, so I don't know if I could have done better.

Hi Allan,
120 is a very impressive tally ... appreciate that you are covering a very large FOV BUT that you are using a 910 - would be interested to know the limiting magnitude (faintest star) that you are able to see in the real time video.
Best regards
William

Yes I was covering a larger are than usual, but I was quite impressed at the final count. Is there a way of posting a pic directly in here from my computer. I could post a single frame for you to look at. All I seem to get is a box with a cross in it.

Hi Allan, I use handiAVI for NLC and other time lapse stuff.
If you use the frame selector option in HandyAVI, save it as a jpg and then post it as usual. If you click the Reply icon at the top right of the reply section here (rather than just the "Post Quick Reply") you get the full posting options for graphics and uploads. There is a file size limit so watch out for that.
I've used HandyAVI for meteor observing and it's very good but unlike UFO it's doesn't have any of the meteor related event filters so some of the smaller meteors you describe might be cosmic rays and "biologics" as I call them.

This is a single frame taken from one of the brighter meteor captures. You can see the 4 stars below Castor and Pollux with the faintest star being mag 4.40. This should give an idea of the limiting magnitude on a clear night with the settings described above.

Hi, That is tremendous! I don't get anywhere near that with the same lens on a 902H2. I was pleased to see B Ursa Minor. Alex recommended getting one of these the last time I spoke to him. He (and you ) clearly has a point!!! Out of curiosity, is yours one of the newer ones which I've read have a better sensor (serial number starting 1001...)? I'm impressed with that performance! Cheers, Bill.

Yes Bill, it must be. My serial number is 012##. I bought 2 but can't check the one on the roof. I expect it is similarly numbered. I will delay fitting the 2nd cam on the roof for a while as I haven't located a suitable lens for it yet. I have a 1/3" 2.8-8mm that I can try but I intend testing the 910 on the scope for dso's first. That might prove interesting also.

Hi Allan,
Agreed, very impressive performance indeed. What type of lens were you looking for to use on the second camera?
Best regards
William

Hi William. I'm open to suggestions. Ideally I want another fast lens but maybe not quite so wide. Maybe in the 4-6mm range. My original intention was to have 2 cameras covering 180 degrees, so I was trying to find lenses that would give a fov of about 100 degrees. My cams are on a mast that can be rotated from ground level so that I can point to where the action might be. I have the 1/3" 2.8-8mm f0.95 that I could try at 8mm or I have a 1/2" 6mm f1.2 that will be ok but not as fast as I would like. Fast lenses in 1/2" format seem to be hard to find. It seems manufacturers are mainly producing 1/3" or megapixel lenses for hi res surveillance work.
If you have any info on suitable lenses I would be interested.
