Hello folks,
I am researching David E. Packer (1862-1936), who made many reports of meteors to the English Mechanic in the 1890's and early 1900's. He observed initially from London, but then mostly from Birmingham. He made lots of reports of "nebulous meteors" and began cataloguing them. I can see that there was a lot of controversy about whether they existed (or were illusions) and about what they are. I can see this exists even until today but there is a general perception they are real, but rare, events.
("Meteors that appear nebulous rather than being sharply-defined are occasionally reported. Various explanations have been suggested, ranging from very fragmentary meteors, through night flying birds and bats, to ball lightning")
I asked Tony Markham about nebulous meteors and he gave some examples of them which have been reported to TA:

1971 Apr p262

Tony also made the point that this is probably an area that video observers can help resolve. I wonder if anyone has recorded any?
Go well!
